Criticism

Web 2.0 is one of the promising technologies of recent times. It is a second generation web based community and hosts different types of services such as wikis, social-networking sites, social classification, social tagging, social indexing and collaborative tagging. The main objective of these services is to assist in creativity, sharing between users and collaboration. The term, Web 2.0, got recognition in the conference which was held in the year 2004. According to Tim O'Reilly, Web 2.0 brought a business revolution in the computer industry. This revolution was brought about by the Internet. The internet acted as the platform and Web 2.0 also helps to understand the rules for success in this new age platform. The term has become very popular in recent times and it has been given rise to criticism.
The term Web 2.0 has raised a number a questions in the minds of people. The people not only include layman but experts are also included. Many people are confused about the nature of this new technology. The opinion about Web 2.0 is broadly divided into two categories. The first group considers that Web 2.0 has brought tremendous change in the computer industry. They consider Web 2.0 as a distinct and revolutionary technology. Where as there is a second group who considers that Web 2.0 has no difference with Web 1.0. It is the second group of people who have raised the criticism against Web 2.0.

The people who have criticized this new age technology believe that Web 2.0 does not stand for a new version of the World Wide Web. It is merely a continuation of Web 1.0. The experts who have criticized this new technique opines that this new age technology do not replace the protocols like HTTP. Web 2.0 uses rich Internet application techniques. They are using new techniques like AJAX, Nexaweb, Adobe Flash, Silverlight, Flex, and OpenLaszlo. But in spite of using these new techniques, Web 2.0 has not been able to replace several tradition techniques such as HTTP. These new techniques are used in addition to the traditional techniques.

Many of the ideas which are featured in Web 2.0 existed well before the use of the term Web 2.0. People have raised criticism against Web 2.0 on this basis. In this respect we can mention about Amazon.com. This website allowed the internet users to voice their opinions, to write reviews and helped in consumer guides much before the terminology of Web 2.0 came into being. The website was launched in the year 1995 and from the same year onwards the website is allowing the users to express their opinion. The opinions expressed by the internet users are in the form of self publishing. All the developments which are included in this new age technology are from the established products Lotus Domino and Lotus Notes.

In an interview Tim Berners-Lee described the term Web 2.0 as a “piece of jargon”, about which no one has any proper and specific idea.
